New Christmas Partnership with Toys for Tots

This week, Captain Douglas and Storm McClure met with a leader of the local Toys for Tots effort her in Floyd, Chattooga, and Polk counties. These two great agencies have worked together in the past in this area and may are still active partners all over the country.

After meeting with Toys for Tots, we have worked out an arrangement of service with them that will enable both organizations to be able to serve both the donor guests and those who will need assistance this Christmas season.

The Salvation Army’s agreement with Toys for Tots is simple but very effective. The Salvation Army will be publicly restarting its’ Angel Tree program in our area. The Angel Tree program allows people to choose an angel from a tree to provide gifts and clothes. After a family applies with The Salvation Army, their information will be shared with the Toys for Tots program to help in avoiding duplication. This will enable both agencies to be able to serve more families effectively in our area.

Both of these programs are important for a successful Christmas season. Toys for Tots does a great job in toy collection and serving families. The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program enables donors the opportunity to shop for specific children that they choose from the Angel Tree. Both of these programs working together will provide a wonderful Christmas in our area.

It is also important to note that the local Toys for Tots is partnering with other agencies in our area. We are grateful to be partnering with another fine organization that is making a difference in the lives of OTHERS in our area.

The Salvation Army will be taking applications for the Angel Tree program near the end of October!

2014 “Just for Kicks” Shoe Drive

This year, the male and female soccer teams from Pepperell and Armuchee High School wanted to do something to help OTHERS and make a difference in their lives! They decided to collect shoes to be given out to those who needed them. They contacted us (The Salvation Army) and asked if we could partner with them in the collection and distribution of the shoes. And, the 2014 “Just for Kicks” Shoe Drive was created!

To celebrate the event, all of the coaches led their teams on Tuesday evening barefoot! With temperatures in the 40’s, these coaches showed true commitment to teaching the importance of caring for OTHERS!

Due to the efforts of the soccer teams from Pepperell and Armuchee high School, we have over 160 pairs of shoes to distribute to people in our community!

We are grateful to both of these schools! They have taken who they are and helped people!

2014 “Run for the Homeless” 5K Fun Run – May 17, 2014

Each year, the Salvation Army with the support of our gracious community, “fills in the gap” for people who are experiencing some of the worst life has to offer. Through a wonderful network of other partner organizations, The Salvation Army has been a beacon of light and hope for people and families in the greater Rome area for more than 126 years. We have seen the increased numbers in requests for assistance with food, shelter, groceries and family assistance. Last year alone, The Salvation Army provided 3,558 nights of stay in the shelter and offered 10,216 meals at our community-SA Shielddining program. The Women’s Auxiliary of The Salvation Army is excited to host the 1st Annual “Run for the Homeless” 5K Fun Run to be held on Saturday, May 17th, in conjunction with the Roman Road Mile. We are partnering with GoGo Running to provide a first class running experience to all who participate.

Farewell to a Friend from the Red Cross

The Salvation Army wishes a fond farewell to a great friend and partner, Sarah Egan of the American Red Cross of NorthWest Georgia. We have worked closely with Sarah during tornadoes and house fires. Sarah has helped us to make our service more efficient and effective in this area.Farewell to Sarah (3/21/14)

Sarah is moving to New Bern, NC to accept a promotion within the American Red Cross. We are so very proud of the partnership with the Red Cross which is due to the work of Sarah. In honor of that partnership, she has worked hard to make that the relationship remains strong and continues to serve the people of Floyd, Chattooga, and Polk counties.

We offer a full salute to Sarah as she takes this position of greater responsibility and service to people. May God bless the work of her hand, the inspiration of her heart, and the effectiveness of her mind!

Rome Salvation Army celebrates expansion with warehouse tours

While The Salvation Army of Greater Rome’s warehouse adds new space for the local charity, Capt. Doug McClure knows it means a lot more.
As the head of the Christian-based organization’s chapter, McClure has seen exactly what the increased capacity for donations, food, and storage will equal in time.
The nearly 5,000-square-foot building was officially opened in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house Tuesday at The Salvation Army offices at 317 E. First Ave.
“What is great about this space is that it will save a lot of people from a lot of trouble,” McClure said. “This provides a resource for what The Salvation Army does.”
The new space includes room for their automatic baler, which compresses torn and non-wearable clothing donated to the group and packages it to be sold for recycling.
“We want to take what the world might not think is of any value and put God’s stamp on it,” McClure said.

The money raised through the recycling program — an average of $188 per bundle or $3,000 per truckload — goes to fund the different programs at The Salvation Army, such as free meals, the men’s shelter and more.
McClure and Salvation Army Advisory Board Chairman Mark Kozera also announced that they would be opening a small women’s shelter within the next month.
“One of the things that always bothered me since I came here is there was not a place for women to go,” McClure said.
Plans are to convert office space in the group’s current building into room for four women.
“It’s not a lot, but we’re going to see where this goes,” McClure said. “There is still more that we can do.”
David Hunter, a Salvation Army advisory board member, said moving away from leasing space in other parts of town made a lot of sense for the organization.
“Now we are centralized in a space that we own,” Hunter said. “This is great and where it should be.”
McClure highlighted the flexibility that they have with the new space, adding that they can convert the warehouse to store disaster kits or house disaster victims in the case of an emergency.
The downtown campus of The Salvation Army also includes the family thrift store, kitchen, men’s shelter and offices.
McClure said the money used to build the approximately $225,000 facility was not taken from general donations, but raised during Christmas and through people remembering the work of The Salvation Army in their wills and estates.

A ribbon cutting and public open house is now underway for the The Salvation Army‘s  new warehouse facility. Following the ribbon cutting by the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and officials from The Salvation Army, guests are invited to take part in campus tours and enjoy a light lunch. “We encourage of all our partners and people who are interested in learning more about the important work of The Salvation Army in the Greater Rome area. The new warehouse will give the Army some much needed storage and processing space. The family store utilizes a recycling program for unsellable clothing or materials to keep excess waste from filling our landfills. This program will be available for inspection and explanation during the open house,” according to Capt. Douglas McClure.

The Salvation Army has also announced plans to open an area for Women’s shelter.
