FREE COMMUNITY BBQ DINNER FOR OUR NEIGHBORS ON JUNE 24

All of our “neighbors in need” invited to the Army for dinner

Sonny's logo 1(June 24, 2014 – Rome, GA) This year, Sonny’s BBQ of Rome is celebrating their 20th anniversary in serving high quality meals to individuals and families from all over the greater Rome, GA area. Curtis Gardner (Sonny’s BBQ) and his team wanted to find a way to give back to the people of Rome in appreciation for 20 great years. Being a long-time partner with the Army, Gardner contacted Captain McClure about his plan to see what could be arranged.

“We are extremely grateful for our standing partnership with Sonny’s and we have been honored to work alongside them in serving OTHERS,” said McClure. “Sonny’s has donated food to The Salvation Army on many occasions and is a welcome treat in our regular evening dinner service.”

This Tuesday, June 24 at 5:30pm, Sonny’s BBQ will be serving a free doing_most_good-hires-jpg.jpgBBQ dinner to the first 120 people who come to The Salvation Army. Last year, The Salvation Army served over 10,000 meals in its’ evening meal service. Along with providing over 3,500 nights of stay in the Emergency Shelter, the programs have become a lifeline to many people in this area.

The Salvation Army and Sonny’s BBQ want to invite of all our neighbors to stop by 310 East 2nd Avenue at 5:30pm on June 24 for some good BBQ. Please let everyone know about this meal that could benefit from a great meal and a time of fellowship with OTHERS in our area.

About The Salvation Army:

The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, has been supporting those most in need in Christ’s name, without discrimination, since 1865. More than 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a broad array of social services that includes providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, supports for the elderly and ill, shelter and job placement for the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children to flourish. From Hopelessness to Hope-FILLED-ness: Debbie Bell

Two weeks ago, Debbie Bell came to The Salvation Army looking for a place to stay. Having recently opened the new women’s dorm room, Debbie is the first woman to stay at The Salvation Army in many years. Debbie lived in Tallapoosa, GA for many years. Recently, she and her son, Blake, were evicted from their home and had no where to go. They both lost hope and decided that life was not worth living anymore.

But…

She found a place at The Salvation Army. She says that Rome is a lot different from Tallapoosa. She has received help from other shelter guests in finding her way around town. She says that they have given her good directions and told her the places to go to get the help she needs.

She told us that she loves the new women’s dorm room. It is so peaceful and she feels very safe there. She said that safety is a very big concern for her. She needs to know that the place she is staying is safe and that the staff is doing their jobs. When we asked her about the staff, she said that they were very generous and kind. They are always quick to help her and allow her to help OTHERS in return.

Bell_Debbie-Shelter_GuestShe recently got a roommate in the dorm room. We have another female guest checked in and staying with us. They are doing well and get along very well together. They both work hard to make sure the room is kept up.

Debbie shared that her son, Blake, is now also a guest at the shelter. He is doing well and is adjusting to their new situation very quickly. She admitted that he is younger and adjust quicker that she does!

Debbie did want to share a message with all of our donors and supporters:

The Salvation Army is very helpful! They are there when you need them. Thank you for helping me out!
